This hydrogen engine is
revolutionizing the automotive industry: neither American nor German
The new hydrogen engine the
industry has been waiting years for arrives directly from Korea.
Imagine one that leaves internal combustion behind and doubles its
range. This is precisely what they have achieved by developing a new
type of injection, which could be described as second-generation. We
show you all the technical characteristics of this invention that
comes to unseat the electric cars.
The hydrogen engine that changes
everything: it is the end of electrics
Korean scientists have developed a
unique hydrogen engine for light-duty vehicles that has the
potential to entirely change the course of automotive industry. A
2-liter H2ICE engine powered by hydrogen was developed by scientists
at KIMM – the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials.
It is completely fuelled by free hydrogen and
represents a major development of hydrogen engine technology. The new
hydrogen engine is our technology solution to enable serial production
of hydrogen-powered vehicles capable of competing commercially against
traditionally fuelled vehicles.
The invention a hydrogen-fuelled car
has changed that perception. Now the hydrogen is seen as a
clean and renewable fuel source for cars of the next generation. The
strategy of this Korean hydrogen engine is to use the direct injection
system which results in a high rating of the efficiency expected from
hydrogen.
This powertrain, which differs from the formerly
used hydrogen engines, does not entail a need to use them with natural gas
or gasoline as fuel. With this latest development, the manufacture of
large quantities of Hydrogen-powered vehicles with minimal or no harm to
the environment is now technically achievable.
Korea’s hydrogen engine development: a
renewable milestone
The hydrogen engine developed by KIMM researchers
has 2 liters of displacement, the internal combustion
engine designed to power by hydrogen. The engine maximum power output is
97 kilowatts (130 horsepower) and the mentioned maximum torque is
generated at 5,500 rpm.
The power plant adapts to a high-pressure direct
injection technology, which pours hydrogen molecules in the combustion
chamber directly. However, anatomically, the system facilitates fuel
effectiveness against port hydrogen engines which use fuel injection type.
The engine can operate at a compression
ratio of 14:1. Firstly, the combustion in EVs is more complete
than in internal combustion engines because the composition of the fuel is
more homogeneous, with no gasoline, oil, or gaseous fuel. It’s much
lighter and smaller than hydrogen engines of the past.
The researchers say that the integration of
hydrogen technology proves that the engine’s 38% thermal efficiency
compares well to conventional gasoline engines. The cramped parallel pair
of 2-litre engine is applicable for utilization in the medium-sized cars.
The characteristics of the Korean
hydrogen engine, in detail: this is how it has been achieved
The two new hydrogen engines just made by
scientists in South Korea lead to the biggest environmental
benefits in the field of automobiles. Hydrogen found to be single
fuel type for the 2-Litter engine that produced emissions without even 1%
of the amount of pollutants of conventional gasoline-engines is a fact.
Hydrogen fuel cells employ combine of hydrogen and
oxygen to generate electricity and water as the only connection which the
systems leave the generated energy. By offering hydrogen to the market
place as fuel, it makes hydrogen very clean alternative.
In the situation of classic gasoline engines, the
combustion of non-renewable energy resources like gasoline produces oxides
of nitrogen and other unwanted emissions, such as particulate matter,
volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
The truth is that this Korean hydrogen
engine is going to be a historic milestone, by developing a new type of
injection and testing it at extremely low temperatures. From an
environmental point of view, it reduces emissions by 99%, and generates
only water vapor that does not harm the atmosphere. Do you understand why
it is a promising option? Perhaps we will soon see it commercialized on a
large scale throughout the United States.
